This past May, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft successfully passed the testing phase and was declared an operational mission. The SDO is now collecting 1.5 terabytes of information about the sun each day.

Moderate sunspot region 1069 became active over the weekend and NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) was there to capture it. Usually C-class flares are relatively harmless even if it was Earth directed. Cycle 24 is very slowly warming up, and I have no doubt it will be hurling some surprises Earth's way early 2011.
